Bid to curb Riccarton parking problems

ANDREW KING

Problems with parking in the streets near Westfield Riccarton have reared its head again. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board member Helen Broughton will lobby at tomorrow’s meeting to implement angle parking on Elizabeth St to try to curb parking problems. Due to population increase, Ms Broughton said more parking is needed on the street for residents. “In Elizabeth St many of the units have four to five people each owning a car, she said. In the past, difficulties on Elizabeth St were caused by employees from Westfield Riccarton and other businesses parking on the street all day, so two hour parking restrictions were put in. Ms Broughton believed angle parking was the solution to the problems on Elizabeth St, between Picton Ave and Clarence St. “As intensification increases in Riccarton this issue will become a common occurrence, Ms Broughton said. Ms Broughton will need the support of the board to get through the notice of motion

Comedian up for award BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Growing up David Correos would do anything to make the older kids laugh. He is no different now after being named one of five nominees who will go head to head for next year’s Billy T Award. The 22-year-old grew up in Woolston, and went to St Thomas of Canterbury College before moving to Auckland late last year. The Billy T Award, named after the late Billy T James, recognises and supports young up-and-coming comedians, and runs every year. Previous winners include Ewen Gilmour, Dai Henwood, Paul Ego and Ben Hurley to name a few. Mr Correos said he vividly remembered getting the call to tell him he was a nominee. He was listening to Ed Sheeran to calm his nerves when it came. “It was a very good moment.” In spite of moving to Auckland in November, he has not quite adjusted to big city life. “I’m not a fully fledged JAFA yet,” he said.

CIGARETTE STARTS FIRE Harewood firefighters were called to a small vegetation fire on Russley Rd on Monday around 1pm. The fire was in the medium strip and started after a cigarette was thrown out the window of a passing car. A fire communications spokesman said they had received ‘quite a number of calls’ about the fire. When the crew arrived on scene they used a shovel and some dirt to extinguish it. Meanwhile, the Sockburn firefighters were called to Kyle Park around 12.30pm on Thursday for a vegetation fire. Police communications requested the fire service after smoke was reported to be coming from the park. Firefighters found an area of tussock about 10 sq m in flames. Police are treating it as suspicious. WOMAN FALLS St John were sent to Oakhampton St after a woman in her 60s fell over. The incident happened on October 11 around 1am. The woman was taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries.

FUNNY-MAN: David Correos is up for the 2016 Billy T Award.

“There’s a lot more hills in Auckland, I’ve got a constant burn in my calves. My diet is more suited for a flat road lifestyle.” He will do anything to make people laugh, which has included chugging two litres of milk in less than two minutes, and

various YouTube videos which include costume tutorials, trivial rantings and life advice. He is the only South Islander to be nominated for the award, coming up against Alice Brine, James Malcolm, Laura Daniel and Matt Stellingwerf. They will be judged on their

performances at New Zealand Comedy Festival next year. The winner will be announced on May 15. But for now it would be business as usual for Mr Correos, visiting the local bakery, hosting quiz nights and doing his squats on Wednesdays

LEASE TO BE CONSIDERED The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board will decide tomorrow if they will grant a five-year lease to Garden City Fellowship for the Hei Hei Link building at 8 Wycola Ave. Garden City Fellowship have been in the community since March 2009 and currently hire the neighbouring Hei Hei Community Centre for larger church services and events.

I want it all and I want it now Bob Cross – Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association Representatives from the Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association spent two and half days last week in mediation talks on Chapter 17 of the proposed District Plan. At these mediation sessions YRRA representatives were confronted with lawyers and planners, who represented the major interest groups. Such a professional presence blows the theory that this District Plan review is a platform for citizens or communities to influence the direction of a new City Plan. Under discussion at these sessions was a variety of rural policies and objectives. The 1989 song by Queen, “I Want it All” sums up this community organisation’s view on the quarry cartel’s future strategy for the western ruralurban fringe. The general thrust around “rural” in the proposed District Plan is to remove any direct relationship to farming and move to a new, all encompassing term “Rural Productive”. Quarrying is classified as a rural activity and a new rural

SOAP BOX title assures strong recognition for such activities. The post earthquake environment has seen an explosion of truck movements, new quarry sites and a general deterioration of the rural character and amenity in the Yaldhurst/Templeton area. Further proposals by the cartel are being lobbied - extending quarry operational hours by a further four hours finishing at 10pm on weekdays and Saturdays, being able to operate on

selected Sundays and turning the Quarry Zone into a permanent industrial processing site. However the most contentious issue by the cartel is their planned application to quarry below the highest recorded groundwater level (this application will be publicly notified). Current quarrying over the Yaldhurst/West Melton recharge zone places Christchurch’s world class potable water at risk. The proposal to go 3-4 metres under the established levels (in total averaging 14-15 metres below ground level) seriously exposes the drinking water for the residents of Christchurch to a range of contaminants. Are a few extra stones worth this risk when there are many other options?

There is a new temporary liquor ban for the surrounding areas of the Riccarton Racecourse. Approved by the city council on Thursday, it will prevent racegoers from having open alcohol on them while on the way to the track. This is to stop the rubbish and booze-fuelled antics that are associated with allowing alcohol to be drunk on the streets. What do you think of the move? Is it a good idea to stop those who are pre-loading before the event? Or is Christchurch on its

Cup day liquor ban at Riccarton BY ANDREW KING

A temporary liquor ban will be in place at this year’s New Zealand Cup Day. The city council on Thursday approved the ban. Held at the Riccarton Racecourse on November 14, the surrounding area will be an alcohol free zone from 7am until midnight. The zone is from Yaldhurst Rd to Middlepark Rd, Epsom Rd to Racecourse Rd, Buchanans Rd to Masham Rd, and Masham Rd to Yaldhurst Rd. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said he was supportive of the ban. “We don’t mind young people having a good time as long as they respect the environment around them,” he said. Ravil Atlas

our PEOPLE

From Broadway and global tours to

avil Atlas has been all over the world as an actor, R opera singer and musical theatre performer. Now he teaches at Burnside High School. Andrew King talks with him about working with producers and directors across the world, and about New Zealand talent. Hi Ravil, tell us where you grew up? I am a San Francisco native. Grew up in California, went to school there and university. I went to San Jose State University. My plan was to be a high school choir teacher. You wanted to be a high school choir teacher? Yeah that was my dream, you have to dream big when you are 17. I knew teaching was involved in music and back in those days you used to pay around $28 a semester to go, so I thought, what the hell, I’ll just go. So that’s where the love of music really took off? It is where I started taking voice lessons for the first time. Also brass and conducting lessons. I started in 1978 and I finished in 1986, that was my bachelor degree, it’s called the California plan, My masters I started in 1986 and finished in 1993. And in between I went off and did a bunch of things.

Well, that is a long time studying. What did you do in between? There is a group called Chanticleer, the king singers of America. They are a 10 man vocal ensemble and multi Grammy award winning group. I found myself, at the age of 23, singing choral music all around the world with them. We went to Europe and did four US tours, and me, not knowing what any of that meant, was just singing and having fun. Oh, and making money. So you went back to finish your study? Yeah, I changed my major to tenor. While doing all that my friend asked me if I wanted to do a musical. They handed me a piece of music and said go for it and it just happened to be for a show called Les Miserables. That is quite a serious musical right? There was a line right around the block, all there to audition. It had only been open on Broadway

for about a year, and it is a huge performance. After I had sung they offered me the role on-site, which just doesn’t happen. So how did you transfer from that into opera? Well in between all of that I had done a few operas outside of university. I really enjoyed them. I left Les Miserables after a year and a half and finished my masters

degree which I had changed from education to vocal performance. I was offered the job of house tenor at Opera San Jose. So then I was a paid opera singer. I heard that you were recruited to perform in Phantom of the Opera? Yeah I was called up to do it, and I said that I didn’t do musical theatre any more and that I was

an opera singer. I was told they had just the part for me. I played Piangi. Working with the directors on those shows must have been a life changing experience for you. It was. Working with guys like Harold Prince, Trevor Nunn and Andrew Lloyd Webber was just amazing. Hal Prince is arguably the greatest ever musical theatre director in American history. He was just so clear on what he wanted to achieve. I would sit behind him in rehearsals and listen to him work. It was the same with Trevor Nunn, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Franco Zeffirelli, it is amazing how they all have similar qualities. So what brought you to New Zealand? A Kiwi wife. The talented, amazing and brilliant Amanda Atlas. We meet in New York. She was a young artist doing her OE and we meet in a theatre. It was your typical stage romance. Then, being the move-about type that I am, I wanted to go to Italy, so I asked Amanda to come with me. Just like that? Actually it kind of was just like that. We were falling in love and all that as we had been going out for a year and a half. I had finally got my papers to work in Italy. My style of opera was being done much more over there. It was

teaching at Burnside easier for us to get married a year earlier than we planned to get her over there, so that’s what we did. Where to from there? We moved from Italy to London. I was tired at that point. I had been performing for about 25 years, moving around, so I got back into teaching. I taught in Newcastle for a bit. We talked about having a family and said we would move to New Zealand if we were to have kids. One week later we were pregnant. That was quick. It made sense to move back here. My parents had just died and my sister lives in Melbourne, so we decided that we would move to Christchurch. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Where did you start working when you moved over to New Zealand? I moved here and met some people who told me the Burnside music teacher was on maternity leave, so I found myself after all these years teaching. We have our kids doing more than most university music programmes do. After all your travel, how does the talent in New Zealand stack up against the rest of the world? I think you have more talent per capita than anywhere I have been in the world. The talent is there

MASTER OF THE STAGE: Ravil Atlas (centre) performed for Opera San Jose as the house tenor during an incredible career. but the professional teaching is not there yet. I am starting to teach teachers now. You have one of the top ten tenors in the world here at the moment, Simon O’Neill. So you enjoy working at Burnside High School? I work with an absolute brilliant man named Gavin Hurley. He is the greatest music teacher and administrator I have ever met in my life. I can’t sing his praises enough. What is your favourite piece of music? Verdi’s Requiem. It is like opera, theatre, a musical and god all rolled into one. It is a very special

piece to me. I have performed the solo about 13 times. So how do you enjoy living in Christchurch? I had to learn how to have a Kiwi Christmas, which was great. They’re not too bad are they? Yeah, chardonnay on the deck. I can handle it (laughing). So what do you enjoy about teaching the most? Giving back what I was given. I was blessed by some phenomenal teachers. The 16-30 age range is boundless. It is so great to work with them. If I can pass on what I was given, that is why I do it.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT: Halswell Preschool pupils (left to right) Jack Ross, Ethan Scully, Imogen Cook and Kiana Harrison got to have a look at different toy for show and tell. Ethan bought in a carving of the Taipei tower in Taiwan - a present from his uncle. The children were really fascinated by how the car went round and yet it wasn’t connected. The car is moved by a magnet.

Pupils around the Western News area have participated in the International ShakeOut Day of Action. At 9.15am on Thursday children and adults took cover to keep the practice fresh in their minds in case another earthquake was to hit the city. Sockburn School, Russely School, Avonhead School and Hornby Primary School all practised the drill.

UNDER THE DESK: Junior pupils at Russley School participate in Thursday mornings earthquake drill.

DOWN LOW: Sockburn School pupils show they know how to deal with an earthquake.

Avonhead School deputy principal Vicki Lewis said: “We had 620 students who took part and we also used the morning to practice our other emergency procedures.” Hornby Primary School principal Gary Roberts said they had more than 200 children invovled with the drill. “The exercise went very well,” he said. International ShakeOut Day of Action

was created to help people and organisations get better prepared for major earthquakes, and practise ‘Drop, Cover and Hold’ - the right action to take during an earthquake. It provides an opportunity for businesses, workplaces and other organisations to examine and review their own emergency preparedness arrangements.

Listing Number: BE192378

Located in the heart of Thorrington down exclusive Majestic Lane this stylish family home is definitely a must see. A large family kitchen opens onto a roomy dining/family room which in turn leads into the spacious formal lounge. A private courtyard opening from the living room provides that all important outdoor space for when summer returns. The entrance is grand in size and will surely impress those who call. A double bedroom is located downstairs as is a generously sized powder room. Upstairs the feeling of space continues with wide landings leading onto the bedrooms. The master suite is bigger than many living rooms with its own walk in robe and ensuite. The second bedroom is also exceedingly generous - more a triple sized bedroom than a double in fact! Bedroom three is a double and there is a study or box room also at this level. Both the main bathroom and ensuite have baths as well as separate showers and are certainly not small. For those whom a garage is important this will not disappoint. All this situated on an easy care section and in zone for the highly sought after Thorrington Primary and Cashmere High. My clients are realistic and want to be sold now so call asap to view - this property may well sell very quickly! OPEN HOMES Sunday 12.30-1pm

Principal Julie Moor said that one of the school’s greatest responsibilities as an educator was to ensure that young women were well equipped for the world beyond school. “It is a strength of our network that we can give our girls and the wider community the opportunity to listen to

Dame Jenny will speak in the school’s new Merivale Lane Theatre on October 20 and Sarah Robb Hagan will follow in the Gibson Centre on November 5. Hall fire follows scooter theft MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Somebody stole a motor scooter from Domain Tce in Spreydon last Thursday. They probably pushed it along the road until they got to the Coronation Hall. This is a hall with plenty of history in the area. It’s still utilised by a softball club and appears to be quite a wee social hub. They won’t be using it for a while. That’s because our motorcycle thief set the machine on fire and left it leaning against the Coronation Hall. The walls are wooden weatherboard. They caught on fire which then spread into the roof space. The hall is quite badly damaged and will take months to repair. The question is why? Why would the offender do this? If you can supply any logical reason then you’re cleverer than I am. Fires starting from discarded cigarettes are much less prevalent than many people believe. But at this time of year they do occur here because of the Canterbury nor’wester. This week we saw two examples, one on the Main South Rd, Hornby, and the second on Russley Rd.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has won two awards at the Norfolk Island Theatre Festival. The school won best youth production and runner-up best overall production. The year 13 students performed Breaking News, a play by award-winning New Zealand playwright, Angie Farrow. Director of theatre arts, Robert Gilbert has been named Best Director for the sixth time. Breaking News explores the relationship between of selfimage and media. Mr Gilbert describes the play as a perfect fit for the cast. “The girls immediately identified with the central character,” Mr Gilbert said. “As an ensemble piece of physical theatre, they really had to commit to a disciplined rehearsal regime. “They put their hearts and souls into their roles and that came across with their winning performance,” he said. This is only the second time Rangi Ruru have competed at the festival. In 2013 a group of year 12 students won Best Production for their performance of Bottom’s Tale, an excerpt from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Breaking News is Ms Farrow’s

WAVE RIDER: Henry Hawke in action at the under 18 boys’ section of the National Scholastic Surf Championships.

Christchurch Boys’ High School students Henry Hawke and Conor McLennan were part of a Canterbury surf team that finished a credible fifth in the National Scholastic Surf Championships in Gisborne. They were competing alongside 10 other surfers from the Seventhwave Canterbury Scholastic Surf Team. Hawke was competing in the under 18 boys’ section, and McLennan was in the under 16 boys’ section. The team had a strong Results Longboarding Seb Johnson (St Bede’s) 2nd Under-18 Boys Jack Wilson (St Bede’s) 5th Henry Hawke (CBHS) 7th Moss Thompson (Rudolf Steiner) 7th

showing at the championships, finishing fifth out of the twelve teams competing from throughout New Zealand. St Bede’s College student Seb Johnson has carved his way to a silver medal in the longboard section. Despite the low numbers Johnson said he was ‘stoked’ to get the silver medal saying it was the best he had ever done at the event. The team gained six semi final placings. Liam Wright, Tegan Bishop, Jack Wilson finished fifth in their respective divisions.

Moss Thompson and Zac van Eekelen all finished seventh along with Hawke. The surfers trained all though the depths of winter thanks to the support of coaches Nick Black and Alan Temoananui. Team manager Aaron Lock said they started training twice a week from May with beach training in the weekend and fitness on the Thursday. “Temperatures in the water got down to eight degrees this year which is colder than usual,” he said.

Alleviate lower back pain from your life We are hard on our bodies. The twisting, turning, lifting, bending and impact of everyday life can take its toll on our lower backs. This is why lower back pain is one of

the most common injuries – in fact more than 80 per cent of the population will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives. The lower back is an intricate structure of interconnected and overlapping elements

which includes tendons and muscles and other soft tissues, highly sensitive nerves and nerve roots that travel from the lower back down into the legs and feet, small and complex joints and spinal discs with their gelatinous inner cores. An irritation or problem with any of these structures can cause lower back pain and/or pain that radiates or is referred to other parts of the body. Pain from ensuing lower back muscle spasms can be severe, and pain from a number of syndromes can become chronic. Pain can be linked to a general cause such as muscle strain, injury or over use – or it can be attributed to a specific diagnosed condition of the spine. These can include: •Herniated Disc •Degenerative Disc Disease •Spondylolisthesis •Spinal Stenosis •Osteoarthritis

290 halswell Road

How Chiropractic Care Helps When patients with non-specific chronic low back pain are treated by chiropractors, the longterm outcome is enhanced by obtaining maintenance spinal manipulation after the initial intensive manipulative therapy. The common goal of most chiropractic techniques is to restore or to enhance joint function, with the general goals of resolving joint inflammation and reducing pain. Some approaches use some force (spinal manipulation), while others are more gentle (spinal mobilization). A key factor to living with a spine or back pain condition is staying healthy. Overall

wellness is a combination of a balanced diet, appropriate exercise and physical activity, restful sleep and positive lifestyle choices. Identifying the symptoms, along with an accurate diagnosis of the underlying cause of the pain, is the first step in obtaining effective pain relief.

Southern Chiropractic, located at 290 halswell Road, is open Monday 8am-6pm and Wednesday 9.30am-6pm, Thursday 1pm-6pm, and Friday 9am-5pm. on Tuesdays they operate from Ashburton Chiropractic in Ashburton. For Tuesday bookings please phone 03 308 9516. For all other bookings at their halswell location, please phone 03 322 1432 or email Dr.Grob@southernchiropractic.co.nz or dre.nik@ xtra.co.nz, or visit their website at www.southernchiropratic.co.nz for further information.

New diabetes exercise group starts in Christchurch

T

ype 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.” For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese. The programme comprises a circuit that allows the clients to do the exercises at their own pace, without any pressure to keep up, combined with advice from the community diabetes team who support them through the necessary changes to their food habits. “The advantage for these clients is that we are a normal public gym, so our diabetes clients are mixing with people who don’t have health conditions,” team member Ietje van Stolk says. “And by coming to the gym, our diabetes clients are getting out of the house and are meeting other people including people with the same issues and weight problems as they have, and being physically active is very motivating. They encourage each other and there is plenty of fun and humour between themselves and with the instructors, who are there to lean on and help everyone reach their goals.” Medical research shows participation in regular exercise gets the heart rate up, helps strengthen muscles, improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, Ietje points out. It also positively affects lipids and blood pressure, reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves quality of life. Physical Sense Gym & Physio has had many positive comments

Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham from clients about the programme. One, who goes six times a week, says he loves having somewhere to go and hates the days he is not going to the gym. Another says, “It’s the only thing I have for me, and I have improved my eating habits.” Others have found walking easier and have increased energy and fitness. To encourage those on limited income, the first four sessions are free, and if clients have WINZ support the programme usually remains free, Ietje says. Attending the gym is as easy as a bus ride which stops right at the front door. There is also plenty of parking available should you choose to drive. Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. Phone 377 2577.

oQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent. Researchers were amazed with the benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well. In a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found that patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Also, patients on the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events, but from

all causes. According to lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age. Keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. For more info, call Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy on 388 5757. Leaving a legacy and helping to save lives

Miracle weight loss fruit An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia Cambogia from India and other parts of Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr Oz Show has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.

E

ven without exercise and diet, changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of stroke and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in New Zealand and also a major cause of loss of quality of life. By leaving a bequest to the Christchurch Heart Institute, we can work to reduce this number through valuable research into the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

Lifestyle Village

ifestyle Village in Geraldine is now centred on stage 5, with our first residents in this stage moving in late November. Concurrently, with this is the construction of our new McKenzie Leisure Centre, which will cater for many lifestyle activities such as an indoor heated swimming pool and spa pool, gymnasium, art and craft area, library, lounge (with pool table, etc), hairdressing room and other key amenities. Out on the north side, the bowling green (plus croquet) is being formed to be followed by petanque, mini-golf and a children’s playground. The official opening of the Village and Leisure Centre is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, with the next day being a Public Open Day between 1pm and 4pm. Visitors are most welcome to come and inspect the Village and Leisure Centre on that Sunday. There will be light refreshments and music in the Lounge and some villas will be open for inspection. There are now 32 occupied villas with 49 residents. As the number of residents has increased, so has the social aspect of village living. The spacious and well-insulated villas are a mixture of stand-alone and duplex styles with four basic plans to choose from. They all have at least two bedrooms and internal access garaging. There is a village bus, men’s workshop, allotments and parking for caravans, boats and campervans on-site. We will eventually build up to 120 villas, 10 apartments and 12 assisted-care apartments, the latter being

attached to McKenzie HealthCare next door. McKenzie HealthCare is an aged care facility with rest home, hospital, palliative care and dementia services. For more information, please give David Connolly a call on 0800 84 55 24 or visit www.mlv.co.nz.

Diabetes - Are you a sitter?

W

e sit in cafés, offices, the car, in front of TV and computers. Yet we know that inactivity is one of the high risk factors for diabetes. More than 270,000 New Zealanders have diagnosed diabetes and many have it without knowing. Poorly managed diabetes is a major cause of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, blindness and foot and leg amputations. It is estimated that about a quarter of people with diabetes may not meet the basic requirements of foot care to avoid the risk of future amputation. Keeping circulation boosted in feet and legs is essential to help avoid foot complications – numbness, tingling, loss of feeling, abrasions and ulcers, which do not heal and can lead to amputation. So keep moving while you sit – in front of TV, in the office, the car. The Aircycle circulation booster enables this – helping maintain good blood flow to feet and legs. It is helpful for anyone who sits long periods as well as those with diabetes and arthritis. Aircycles are available from Diabetes Christchurch, pharmacies, online at www.aircycle.co.nz or by phoning 04 569 5013.
